Sumida River

After visiting the garde we took  the a cruise down the Sumida River to the island of daiba. Tokyo is criss-crosed by rivers and canals with the area east of the river protected by locks as it is considerably lower than the area west of the river. The river is criss-crossed with bridges including the Kachidoki bridge pictured here. The Kachidoki was designed to open in the centre to allow large boats to pass through although this has happened for a long time.
